MORE ON LOWE:
The Edmonton Oilers announced today  General Manager Kevin Lowe has agreed to a four year contract extension that will see him guide the team through the 2011-12 NHL season.

The Edmonton Oilers’ first NHL first draft choice, Lowe has made a strong impact on the team, as a player, coach and general manager.

On the ice, he was an integral part of all five Oilers Stanley Cup championships during his 15 seasons in Edmonton. After retiring from the game following the 1997-98 season, Lowe joined the Oilers coaching staff as an Assistant Coach under Ron Low and in 1999-2000, he became the Oilers seventh head coach, guiding  the Oilers to a second place finish in the Northwest Division. On June 9th, 2000, Lowe was named General Manager. Considered as one of the NHL’s top young executives, Kevin most recently helped guide the Oilers to the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals.

“This franchise is measured upon the quality of the key management people and the quality of our hockey players.  Therefore this is a very important announcement for our franchise,” said Cal Nichols, Chairman of the Edmonton Investors Group. “The Edmonton Investors Group also acknowledges his stature as a pillar in the community, which brings even more value to this team, this city, and the greater Edmonton community.  Edmonton should feel fortunate to have him as our General Manager, and we are thrilled to be able to make this announcement today.”

Head Coach Craig MacTavish adds, “I feel very fortunate to be able to work in the environment Kevin has created here.  There has never been any question that he’s willing to do anything at any time to help this hockey club, and that enables the coaches, players, scouts, and all of hockey operations to concentrate on winning hockey games.  We’ve been in the NHL together for a long time now, and I can tell you he has the full respect of every knowledgeable hockey person, and deservedly so.”

Ethan Moreau, the new Captain of the Edmonton Oilers says, “I think this is important.  I’ve only been Oilers captain for a few days, but I’ve been here since Kevin Lowe was an assistant coach, the head coach and the General Manager, so I’m pretty familiar with the kind of relationship he wants with the team and of the expectations he has from the players.  He is not the kind of person anybody wants to disappoint and I think he’s always been a real leader”.
