Oilers hockey school almost full
“Oil Country is the largest producer of NHL talent in the world,” said Patrick LaForge, President & CEO of the Edmonton Oilers. “By introducing Edmonton Oilers Hockey School, we hope to contribute to that proud tradition, by teaching young players some of the special skills and attitudes necessary to continue their hockey dreams.”
The Oilers Hockey School will provide players with the newest off-ice training techniques, core strength exercises, and seminars ranging from motivation to nutrition. There will also be 11 90-minute ice sessions plus a game on Saturday.
"Okanagan Hockey School is very excited about this partnership with the Edmonton Oilers," said Andy Oakes, President of Okanagan Hockey School. "We feel that the combination of experience between the Oilers and the Okanagan Hockey School will provide a world-class experience to young, aspiring hockey players. The athletes attending the Edmonton Oilers Hockey School can expect an experience that will be beneficial to their overall development, both as a person and as a player."
Some of the skills that will be worked on include skating, with professional power skating instruction, and instruction in wrist, backhand, snap and slap shot. Students will receive video analysis of skating and shooting and a private individual conference with an assigned instructor.
The hockey school offers programs for both elite and regular skaters. The Elite Program is for players who have reached a high level of the basic skills for their age and are prepared to undertake a more rigorous program, including 30 minutes extra ice time each day.
Players will partake in an NHL-style skills competition with electronic timing devices. Categories that will be measured include skating analysis, on-ice shooting analysis, hardest shot and breakaway challenge.
Several Oilers players will be on-hand to provide instruction as well as members of the Oilers coaching staff including assistant coach Craig Simpson.
There are still a small number of openings available for the 13-16 age group.
