Oilers obtain Dick Tarnstrom from Pittsburgh

The Edmonton Oilers have obtained defenceman Dick Tarnstrom from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenceman Cory Cross and right winger Jani Rita.
In his fourth NHL season, the 61", 205 pound, native of Sundbyberg, Sweden has scored five goals and five assists in 33 games with the Penguins this season and has 52 penalty minutes. Four of his five goals have come on the powerplay.
The 31-year-old became the first defenceman to lead the Penguins in scoring when he scored 16-36-52 in 80 games during the 2003-04 season. Tarnstrom was ranked first in powerplay scoring among NHL defencemen with 12-26-38 and he led all blueliners in powerplay goals.
Tarnstrom made his NHL debut with the New York Islanders in 2001-02, scoring 3-16-19 in 62 games during his rookie season. He was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh in August of 2002 and played the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons with the Penguins.
In 236 career NHL games, Tarnstrom has scored 31-91-122 with 178 penalty minutes.
A member of Team Sweden at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, he has represented Sweden at two world junior championships (1995, 1996) and two world championships (2003, 2004).
