Oilers To 'Celebrate Hockey' Throughout January and February
To kick off the 'Celebrate Hockey' campaign this week, the Oilers will be welcoming NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to Edmonton on Friday, January 6. Commissioner Bettman will be the Guest of Honor for an Edmonton Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on Friday afternoon at the Sutton Place Hotel.
Later that afternoon, Commissioner Bettman will drop a ceremonial puck to launch the 630 CHED Backyard Classic in Ardrossan. The Gutscher family in Ardrossan will not only host Commissioner Bettman, but also members of the Edmonton Oilers, coaching staff and alumni, for an afternoon scrimmage on their front yard rink. The private game was awarded to the Gutscher family as Grand Prize Winners of 630 CHED's Backyard Classic promotion.
On Saturday, January 7, Commissioner Bettman will visit Garrison Edmonton, where he will personally greet the Garrison Warriors Bantam hockey team, and escort them back to Rexall Place on a private bus for an afternoon of VIP treatment. With approximately 1,500 local soldiers being deployed to Afghanistan in February, the Edmonton Oilers will treat the Garrison Warriors and one of their parents to Saturday night's sold out game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. As well, the Garrison Warriors will be given the opportunity to tour the Oilers dressing room and skate on Rexall Place ice. A Garrison Warriors player will also drop the puck in a ceremonial face-off prior to the start of Saturday's game, as part of CBC's Hockey Day In Canada festivities.
Finally, on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., the Edmonton Oilers will hold their annual Superskills competition, in which Oilers players compete against each other in a series of skills competitions. Joining the Oilers on Rexall Place ice will be the Whitemud West Edmonton Junior Oilers. Tickets are available in advance for only $5 ($8 at the door) at select Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.edmontonoilers.com, or by calling 414-GOAL.
