Oilers Championship Banners To Get New Life

"A couple years ago, looking at our Championship Banners, I noticed how their condition was deteriorating, and realized that we had to do something about them," said Kevin Lowe, General Manager of the Edmonton Oilers, and an important member of the teams that claimed all 22 banners. "A lot of effort by a lot of people went into earning those banners, and I continue to feel a lot of pride when I look up at them. It is important that they be maintained in pristine condition, out of respect for Wayne, Mark, and all the other players who battled so hard for them."
The new banners will be exact replicas of the originals - having been produced by the same local manufacturer as the originals. The new banners will feature improved dyes and materials that will resist fading over the years. The new banners will debut on Monday, November 21st, when the Oilers meet the San Jose Sharks.
"When you walk into Rexall Place for the first time, whether youre a player or a fan, its hard not to be awed by those 22 Championship Banners hanging over the ice," said Patrick LaForge, President & CEO of the Edmonton Oilers. "The new banners will carry on that proud tradition, while the original banners will continue to give back to our community by helping raise a significant amount of revenue for the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation."
The original 22 Championship Banners will be on display for two more Oilers home games (Thursday, November 17 vs. Detroit & Saturday, November 19 vs. Chicago). The original banners will then be made available to hockey fans and collectors as part of an Edmonton Oilers Memorabilia Auction that will take place in the coming weeks, and is expected to generate as much as $300,000 for the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation. Full details on the Edmonton Oilers Auction will be announced next week.
