The Edmonton Oilers are in final preparations for Paul Coffeys jersey retirement ceremony, which takes place on Tuesday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m., at Rexall Place. The signature Oilers event will take place on the same night that Wayne Gretzky makes his coaching debut in Edmonton with the Phoenix Coyotes.
Coffey, who was voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November of 2004, wrapped up a spectacular 21-season NHL career with 4 Stanley Cups and 3 Norris Trophies. Coffey is also the 10th leading scorer in NHL history, scoring 396 goals and 1,135 assists for 1,531 points in 1,409 regular season games.
As an Edmonton Oiler, Coffey is the fifth highest career scorer for the team, amassing 209 goals and 460 assists for 669 points in 532 games played. He was the Oilers first pick (6th overall) in the 1980 Entry Draft, and was a major contributor to the Oilers Stanley Cup Championships in 1984, 1985 and 1987. Coffey was also awarded the Norris Trophy as the NHLs Outstanding Defenceman as an Edmonton Oiler in both 1984 and 1985.
Fans hoping to get a glimpse of Paul Coffey up close can attend the civic ceremony in the City Room at City Hall on Tuesday, October 18, from 12:15 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.
To commemorate Coffeys achievements, some Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) drivers on route #7 will be wearing Paul Coffeys jerseys, while Fire Hall #7 will be flying an Edmonton Oilers flag that same day.
Tickets for the Tuesday, October 18, game against Phoenix are sold out, however fans attending the Civic Ceremony at City Hall will have the chance to win the final pair.
