Detroit had an early two-man advantage and capitalized to take a 1-0 lead. Zetterberg took a pass across the crease from Mathieu Schneider before one-timing it from the right faceoff circle.
The Wings struck again on the power play with Marc Pouliot in the box for roughing. Lidstrom's shot from the left point was tipped by Tomas Holmstrom in front, beating a screened Roloson.
The tide started to turn in Edmonton's favour as the period went on. The line of Petr Sykora, Toby Petersen and Patrick Thoresen pinned the Wings deep in the Detroit end for an entire shift.
Danny Markov took a hooking penalty, giving the Oilers their first power play of the game.
On the ensuing man advantage, Ryan Smyth took a nice pass from Thoresen in the corner and slipped it past Hasek to make it a 2-1 game.
With the Oilers down two men late in the period, Ryan Smyth made a great play to knock the puck down and give himself a partial breakaway. He was stopped by Hasek but was hooked slightly by Lidstrom on the play, drawing a penalty.
Shots on goal were 7-7 after one period.
Detroit came close to regaining their two-goal lead as Kirk Maltby redirected a point shot from Lidstrom but it rang off the post.
Several minutes later, the Oilers tied the game at 2-2. Jan Hejda blasted a shot from the point that was tipped in the slot by Thoresen. The puck landed on the stick of Raffi Torres who flicked it past Hasek.
The Wings regained the lead late in the period. Stationed in front of the net, Valtteri Filpula found a pass from Jiri Hudler and redirected the puck behind Roloson.
In the final minute of the second, Roloson made a huge stop on a redirection from Holmstrom. He had a quick glove and trapped the puck just after coming across.
Shots on goal after two periods were even at 16-16.
Both teams traded chances to start the third period and the Oilers finally connected near the midway point to tie the game up at 3-3.
Marc Pouliot blazed into the Detroit zone and danced around Hasek with a nice deke move. He was unable to get a handle on the puck but Marty Reasoner was right there to put home the rebound.
With a minute left, Ryan Smyth bumped Hasek behind the Detroit net and almost created a scoring chance with the Wings netminder out of position but the puck was cleared out of harm's way.
At the end of regulation, shots were 24-23 for Detroit.
Hemsky had a great chance to end the game early in overtime. He skated in on a partial breakaway but before he could make a move, he was upended by Wings defender Danny Markov. Horcoff's attempt at a rebound was stopped by Hasek.
The overtime period was fast paced with both teams trading chances and the puck moving up and down the ice but nothing was settled.
