DALLAS - The Edmonton Oilers scored early and often en route to a 5-1 win over the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center on Thursday night. Ales Hemsky had a goal and two assists while Jeff Petry and Justin Schultz each had a goal and an assist to help lead the Oilers to the win.
The Oilers got on the board early as Sam Gagner picked up the puck in the corner and threw it out front where it redirected in for Gagner's sixth goal of the season. Jeff Petry and Ales Hemsky had the assists while Ryan Jones was stationed in front.
Less than a minute later, Vern Fiddler took a slashing penalty to put the Oilers on the power play.
On the heels of the penalty kill, Dubnyk made a couple of big saves off Jamie Benn. Benn fired a dangerous shot off the rush followed by a one-timer from the right faceoff circle moments later that the Oilers goaltender slid across and smothered.
Gagner collided with Jones just past the midway point of the period. Gagner was shaken up on the play and had to be helped to the bench. The Oilers centre took another shift at the 11:30 mark.
Edmonton made it 2-0 with 6:08 to play in the first when Justin Schultz swooped down from the point and converted an Eberle pass into the back of the net.
A penalty to Justin Schultz with four minutes to play in the period gave Dallas its first power play of the game.
The period ended with the Oilers on a two-man advantage following penalties to Eric Nystrom and Brenden Dillon.
Nystrom hit Corey Potter from behind into the glass, shaking up the Oilers defenceman. He did not return to the game.
Shots on goal after one were 15 to 10 for the Stars.
The Oilers opened the second period on a two-man advantage but were unable to generate much in the way of chances.
Jeff Petry took a hooking penalty early in the period, putting Dallas back on the power play. The Oilers killed that off but several minutes later Fistric received an interference minor and the Edmonton penalty killers went back to work.
With 8:29 to play in the middle frame, Smid collided in front of the net with the Stars' captain Morrow. Smid was shaken up on the play.
Edmonton's penalty parade continued. With 6:22 to play in the second, Ben Eager got two for high sticking to give Dallas its fourth man advantage of the night. That man advantage ended prematurely as Jamie Benn took a holding the stick minor 90 seconds into it.
During the four-on-four situation, Dillon skated in on a partial break. Dubnyk charged out and made the pad-stack save to preserve Edmonton's two-goal advantage.
Dallas took a too-many-men penalty with 3:47 to go in the period, giving the Oilers their second two-man advantage of the night. This one for 58 seconds.
After the Stars killed off that one, Gagner squared off with Dillon in the final minute of the period.
The Oilers made it a 3-0 lead when Jeff Petry backhanded the puck from the side boards onto the net. It took a weird hop and somehow found its way in.
Shots on goal after 40 minutes were 23 to 21 for the Stars.
Smid stepped onto the ice with 16 minutes to go in the third, returning after a lengthy absence.
Mark Fistric stepped in and answered the bell after Antoine Roussel was shoving Nugent-Hopkins around. Alex Goligoski was also involved and the net play was an Oilers power play.
The onslaught continued after Ben Eager teed up a nice one-timer from the right circle past Lehtonen to make it a 5-0 game.
After Dallas scored a goal, the Oilers continued back on the attack. Ryan Jones crashed into Lehtonen and for his efforts, Jamie Benn cross-checked him. Benn received a five-minute major on the play and a 10-minute misconduct, effectively ending his night
