Oilers General Manager Craig MacTavish has been a busy man this evening, pulling the trigger on a trade that sent veteran defenceman Ladislav Smid to Calgary for prospects and agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

The GM said that tonight, things just fell together for them.

"It's something we've been working on for a while," said MacTavish. "The timing of these things take on a life of their own and that's just when it happened."

What sparked the trade that sent Smid to Calgary was the need to create cap room and the ability to add goaltending depth with a young prospect the team is high on, Laurent Brossoit.

"I think it was just an opportunity to give us some cap breathe to do a few other things and add some goaltending depth. We've always liked Laurent Brossoit and it was a chance to do a couple of things."

When asked what he said to Smid as the defenceman was informed of the move, the Oilers GM said he thanked him for everything he did for the organization and lauded his being such a dependable warrior.

"As I said to Ladi, he's a guy who's an incredible warrior and has been throughout his tenure here. I thank him for his work ethic and sacrifice on behalf of the hockey club and we wish him well going to Calgary."

As for the addition of Bryzgalov, MacTavish says that the team is getting another goaltending option and one who is highly motivated and ready to succeed.

"We get a goaltender that has a history of being a high-performer in parts of his career and we get a guy who I think that's very motivated and he's going to have a chance to be a good goalie."
