When the Oilers won last night it wasn't just special because it was the first win of the season or because it was Dallas Eakins first win as a NHL head coach. The way in which the game was won was astonishing when compared to the history behind it.

Edmonton trailed by three goals heading into the third period but scored four unanswered goals to take the lead before a New Jersey tally with under a minute remaining sent the game to overtime. The Oilers would eventually win 5-4 in a shootout to capture their first win of the 2013-14 season.

Thanks to some fantastic research by the Elias Sports Bureau we determined that the Oilers all-time record when down by three or more goals heading into the third period is 5-277-3. This means it was just the fifth time in team history that the Oilers mounted that kind of comeback win.

The odds were stacked against them. Given their past history, the Oilers had a 1.41 % chance of winning yesterday's game after two periods of play.

That makes the Oilers win yesterday that much more memorable because it doesn't happen often.
