BLOG: MacIntyre is \"a weapon we didn\'t have\"

Steve MacIntyre on Oilers Now | Craig MacTavish talks to the media

Oilers GM Craig MacTavish spoke to the media after today's morning skate and addressed the claiming of Steve MacIntyre off of waivers.

MacIntyre was brought in as a deterrent and protection for the young stars on Edmonton's roster.

"Watching the Leafs-Buffalo game last night and what happened to us against Vancouver it shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that we'd gain some toughness or pick up some toughness," MacTavish. "We've talked about it pretty extensively in the past three or four months. We know the player, we know what he's capable of and we think there was a need here and that's why we picked him up."

When asked if MacIntyre will make an impact right away, MacTavish had this to say:

"I think he's going to make an impact.

"I think you need the deterrent especially with our team. That was further evidenced against Vancouver. They didn't have their most complete lineup so I'm not naive enough to think that their lineup is not going to change but it's a weapon that we didn't have. Now that we have it, we're thankful of that."

MacIntyre was a guest on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer on 630 CHED this morning and was elated to join the Oilers again, having played with them in the past.

"I haven't talked with (the Oilers head coach) yet," MacIntyre told Stauffer. "I assume my role hasn't changed. I'm not trying to re-invent the wheel. I've been following along the story lines that have been happening there in Edmonton with Vancouver. I've been interested in the whole changing of the guard there with the new coaching staff and I've been an Oilers fan since the time I was little even when I was playing with other teams. I follow them and I'm looking forward to coming in and doing what I can to help win."

MacIntyre understands his role with the Oilers and is ready to fill that void as the new weapon for Edmonton.

"You know as well as I do what my job and my role is to do. It's to take care of those young fellas and the rising stars of the Edmonton Oilers and that's going to be a challenge for me and one I am gratefully accepting."
