Politics and the ongoing struggle between Gay Rights Activists and the Russian government, involving the 2014 Winter Olympics, became a topic at today’s Team Canada press conference in Calgary.

“It’s certainly something that we’ve talked about as a management group and with the coaches,” said President and CEO of Hockey Canada Bob Nicholson. “We haven’t talked directly to the players themselves. But the players certainly have the right to speak out themselves, as they feel. We’ve been in constant communication with the Canadian Olympic Committee and totally support the stands that they’re making…”

Potential members of Team Canada weighed in on the Russian government’s decisions to ban gay propaganda and outlaw protests at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

“It’s not something we’ve discussed a whole lot,” said 2014 roster hopeful, Sidney Crosby. “But, for me growing up in Canada… My view has always been that way. I think that everyone has an equal right to play and I think that we’ve been more than supportive of that. “

“With the Olympics and kind of the controversy behind that, I think those decisions and those laws aren’t necessarily something that we might agree with, that I don’t agree with personally. But… Their laws and their views and everyone is entitled to those.”
