The Edmonton Oilers have acquired centre Jerred Smithson from the Florida Panthers for a fourth-round draft pick in 2013.
Smithson, 34, has posted two goals, three assists and a -4 rating this season. The Vernon, BC product is also one of the League's best in the faceoff circle with a 54.8 percent success rate. Undrafted, Smithson spent his entire junior career with the WHL's Calgary Hitmen before turning pro in 2000 with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound pivot has spent the bulk of his pro career (seven seasons) with the Nashville Predators, but has been a Panther since the 2011-12 campaign, appearing in 51 games.
In 578 career NHL games, Smithson has collected 38 goals and 95 points.

Much in the same way Jul. 1’s Free Agent Frenzy has, the NHL Trade Deadline has basically evolved into a national holiday. TSN and Sportsnet (and edmontonoilers.com/OilersTV!) devote their entire day of programming to the rumour mill, breaking news, reaction and analysis.
And why wouldn’t we? Since the 1979-80 season, there have been 459 trades involving 844 players on Deadline Day. The Oilers have been particularly active, making 51 deals and exchanging a total of 110 players with teams across the League.
Lander was originally recalled to the Oilers on Jan. 31 and made his 2012-13 NHL debut that night vs. San Jose. The 6-foot-0, 194-pound pivot had recorded one assist in four games before suffering a broken foot that caused him to miss the next 16 games.
Upon his activation from the IR, Lander was then assigned to the Barons on Mar. 12.
Oilers GM Steve Tambellini has announced that the Oilers have traded prospect Tobias Rieder to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for prospect Kale Kessy.
Kessy, a left winger, is 6'3" 202 lbs. He scored 43 points (19g, 22a) in 60 games this season split between the Kamloops Blazers and Vancouver Giants of the WHL. Kessy has four goals and six points in four playoff games so far with the Blazers.
Kessy was drafted in the fourth round, 111th overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Ewanyk, 19, has played five seasons with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League. He helped the Oil Kings to the 2012 WHL Championship and Edmonton's first Memorial Cup appearance in modern day franchise history.
